Christmas?

What a WEIRD few months!

For Mister Luke- I am now 30 weeks 4 days. Which means almost 31, which means 8 weeks until he's here. The good news... his room is painted and looks AWESOME! Bad news.... well, we don't have furniture, registry for my shower, car seat.... all this kind of snuck up on us during the last few months of stuff around here. We have mooore than enough time. But, probably should get moving on some of that. I'm carrying higher, so I feel like I look much bigger than I did with Katelynn. He also moves a crazy amount. Most likely, we will have my c section scheduled for the end of February. Wowzers

Lump Lump

Man, I really wanted to write this blog to talk about my sweet, easy pregnancy. WHAT HAPPENED?!?!? Katelynn just decided to take over and steal the show. The last few weeks have been frustrating and difficult, but still incredibly blessed.

Adam and I are going to share our story of the tornado times with our Sunday School class in January. We were talking about how this journey parallels that one in so many ways. Me pregnant, so many unknowns, so much stress.... but God has been GOOD to us. We have been supported, prayed over, carried and loved. And He is good.

Katelynn recovered from surgery well, and we took her off her antibiotic to give her little body a break. Then her face puffed up like crazy. We went to the doctor, and two days later her little face was twice the size. Right as our doctor left town. It was hard. the bacteria she has is very rare, and not a whole lot is known other than it's not contagious, not life threatening, and recovery is a really really long annoying process. When animals abscess and swell like that, the normal treatment is to open it up, let it drain and then heal from the inside out. That is his normal course of action as well, however, his consults were saying the new treatment is to leave the swelling, let her body fight it over time. We agreed to keep watching it and do surgery Christmas Eve if it continued to progress. We put her back on antibiotics and we all prayed nonstop. Surgery isn't the end of the world, however, putting someone so small back under, messing with that nerve area again, and having to leave it open.... all things we didn't want to do unless we had to. The antibiotics are slowly bringing the swelling down and for now we are in a good place! Our apt today went great. He felt the lump, said he's comfortable continuing the way we are going, and we will keep watching it. He encouraged me again that this is going to be a very long road, and as much as we all want it fixed tomorrow, all the consults and experts say ride it out. I took some adorable Christmas pictures of Kate under the tree and just cried over the swelling. However, I am so thankful she is small enough not to remember, and I'm beyond thankful that it's starting to decrease.

We will continue this weird journey, no matter what comes next, and I'm so thankful we might be at a point where I can just be pregnant for a while.

You know in the movies about plagues they usually do a flashback to how the virus was initially spread? I wish we had something like that to tell us how she contracted this. Maybe i'll ask God Someday.

So today, the day before Christmas, I finally took a deep breath and am excited to celebrate with our friends and family. We are so so blessed. I cannot even list all the ways.

Who knows....

Surgery for the little girl

Third trimester came with a BANG! I'll write more about how i'm doing next week... but I wanted to put into words our last week.

I have a TERRIBLE memory. I tend to forget the most simple things. I think it's so important for us to write down our story, what God has done in our life, so we can remember. In the Old Testament, they would set up a reminder so they would never forget what God had done and where.... here is our story....

Over a month ago, around Katelynn's first birthday, we noticed some swelling in her face. Our doctor assumed she was having a hard time fighting off a virus. I had recently been sick, and it's October, everyone is sick. She hadn't been exhibiting any symptoms, however, we started looking back through pictures and realized she had been swelling for a while, but not enough for me to notice. My main concern at that point was not getting anyone else sick, and her first birthday. I was so excited when she wasn't running any temp after a day and my doctor told me she was clear to be around friends. We went on with her birthday party and gave her the antibiotics for 10 days. During this time, I kept track of the lump, because I really felt like it wasn't decreasing. All along, my mom istincts have never let me feel like this was something minor. At the end of the antibiotics, Katelynn had her 1 year checkup. Our ped confirmed that the lymph was not any better, and possibly even worse. At that point, he wanted us to see an ENT. He got us a pretty quick apt, because it made him nervous. I tried to just decide he was being really cautious and there was nothing to be nervous about. One thing i'm constantly trying as a parent is to stay calm until told otherwise. I never want her to see an example of worry. Easier said than done of course...

We met with Dr Visor, he felt around on the node and told us it could be a couple of things. He talked about what he has seen over time. He said that there were times when he put kids on 2 rounds of a specific antibiotic. The majority of the bacteria that cause a reaction is killed by that antibiotic. Katelynn got really good at sitting in waiting rooms and taking apart my purse contents...

When you are carefully watching something on your child, every day it looks different. When Dr Visor texted us after a week to check on her, we told him we really felt like it was going down. Later, I laughed because it obviously it hadn't but we really really wanted it to be working!

Dr Visor did a great job of preparing us what would come next... and he mentioned it was a possibility that we would need to biopsy the mass if it didn't improve. When we went back after round 1 of antibiotics, we decided it was time. I took her to get labs drawn (terrible btw) and they bound her up and held her down while they did the biopsy. I was very fakely okay the entire time, then later felt like I was going to throw up. She was very angry at us, and at some point got an arm out, Adam had to go help hold her down. I will happily never do that again.

(she's in that little cocoon)

Biopsy results came back inconclusive. There was a long list of what it was NOT, but few things of what it could be. I was starting to get frustrated because I just really wanted my little girl well. It's hard to watch something grow and grow on her face with no answers. We spent the next 10 days waiting on results and talking to Dr Visor. At the end of that time, he said he was no longer comfortable keeping it in... we scheduled surgery within 48 hours

On surgery day, we woke up at 5am, and I was really nervous about how she would respond not being able to have her cup. She was so excited to still have her paci she didn't even care! She kept excitedly taking it out and showing it to everyone. She thought it was a huge treat! We waited about 30 min before they took us to the holding room. We met the doctors, nurses etc... everyone was super nice. Katelynn HATED the hospital bracelets and was starting to get fussy. The nurse came in and told us it was time for hugs and kisses, the second I kissed her the nurse whisked her from my arms and was gone. That was the first time I really broke down. I paced the halls for a few minutes and just allowed myself to finally be scared. As a non-cryer, I quickly stopped because 700 people asked me if I was ok. Emotion over ;-)

The surgery was scheduled for 100 min. I appreciated the exact time so I could set my watch and count every one! Thankfully, my dad told me to add 30 min to that time. Stef showed up with food and helped keep me distracted while we waited. Adam's parents and my mom were also there. I did really well until we hit 2 hours, then I started getting super restless. Thankfully, they called out and said everything had gone well and they were going to close up shortly! About 15 min later, Dr Visor came out and told us the surgery was more complicated than he expected. The mass was 4 lymph nodes stuck together and was extremely sticky. The nerve didn't appear to have any damage (his #1 concern going in), but that was to be determined. He was allowing us to go home (we were going to be admitted if there was any complications). A few minutes later, someone came and got us to wait for her to return. She showed up groggy and cranky. I don't blame her. She was very unsettled and didn't know what she wanted. She did much better after they removed the iv etc... and finally fully relaxed after we got in the car. I'm SO thankful we were able to go home. After being restless and fussy, she got in the house and said "DOGS". All was fine with the world.

Her drain annoyed her the rest of the day, and she was on and off aggitated, but nothing unbearable.  Our friend who is a peds nurse came over and helped us readjust the tube location, she was much more comfortable after that. That night she slept like a champ! I set alarms to get up and give her pain  meds, and it worked like a charm. She woke up the next morning super swollen, but SO happy. She hasn't looked back! We realize now how fussy and uncomfortable she has been the last few months, there is now NO slowing her down!!!

A week later we got the great results it was just a bacteria!!! She is one of the few kids who  has this reaction, and it is probably something she breathed in. Completely treatable  with surgery and meds.

Throughout this experience, I've really reflected on what I believe when things get hard. I tried to keep perspective and not be dramatic, but this was very trying on Adam and I. I always firmly believe that you have the grace to handle whatever situation you have, and we did, but it wasn't always easy. I hope Katelynn understands some day that sometimes experiences will be hard. There will be things you don't understand, there will be pain... but God is faithful. He never said everything would be easy. I want to believe that because we love and trust him my kid wouldn't be the one that ended up with the weird medical thing. That because we are believers, I wouldn't have to go through my baby girl having surgery when i'm 7 months pregnant. This experience taught me a lot about myself, about God and trully how GOOD he is.

Things I am thankful for during this experience:
- The comfort of the word- It was my complete nourishment during the unknown
- My husband- there are no words to explain the strength and love of this man. He exudes Christ in everything he does
- Our friends and family- I put them together becuase they are both. We had calls, meals , texts  and SO many prayers. We felt supported, understood, loved etc
- Our church family- our Sunday school class is amazing. They love so deeply
- For a safe surgery, and the ability to take my baby home
- For a Bible study of women who love the Lord and we can do life together
- This experience. So many truths I learned. So many things about myself I found out.
- Chocolate.

My favorite picture of the entire thing. LOOK MOM I FEEL BETTER!!!!

The End of Me

Week 27!

Last week of the second trimester, and it feels like it! I'm pretty large, and Luke moves so so much!!!! I will have my glucose test next Monday, not looking forward to that. Last time it made me so tired.

Adam has designed an awesome room for Luke, incorporating some of the ideas I found. We started on it yesterday and it's turning out so perfect!!! I am excited to get it all together, and start buying furniture etc. Katelynn, Sheena and I did a 5k for Thanksgiving and it was so fun! Even though I regularly walk, it's usually not that far, so I was sore for a few days.

We have also spent the last week decorating our house for Christmas. With Katelynn being so young last year, I didn't have an opportunity to do much. We've made up for it! We love our Bivins family projects.

My Stink Stink:

Her face is huge. Like a huge ol jugular haha. She healed well from the biopsy. Few after effects other than the swelling and discoloration. I would be lying if I said it wasn't a trying time. I am trusting God about everything, but it's been an emotional time. I'm tired of my baby being sick, I'm tired of trying to figure out what we are going to do next and considering surgery. I'm sick of my friend not doing well.... I would love to pretend every moment I'm completely strong and this is nothing to me.... but I would be lying. We are still waiting biopsy results. I called this morning and they have the cultures, and are waiting on my ENT to get back from vacation to read them. I am SO GRATEFUL for all the texts and prayers. We have an amazing support system, and I love you all.

Someone shared this verse in Sunday School last week, and it has been in my head since that moment

However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you. Deut. 23:5

If she didn't have the physical signs, you wouldn't know at all that she's sick! I'm super thankful for that. We enjoyed thanksgiving with family and friends, and she enjoyed all the yummy food. She's starting to develop more of an opinion, but that usually means she wants all her fruit and veggies and will cry if I take them away to make her eat her meat. I'll take it! She loves to "help" on any projects, rearrange any drawers she can access, and find the tiniest pieces of plastic on the floor to show us.

She also completely ignores the Christmas tree.... unless she is trying to crawl past it then it's the most annoying thing she's ever seen. She is pretty much a professional giggle monster, and will say "tickle tickle" when she wants to play. We are blessed.

Be Still and Know

Week 25.

As my second trimester chugs along, I have felt pretty good. I have more energy after I've kicked some of the sickness, I've still been fighting off a chest cold- but been able to keep it at bay with natural methods. I have gotten much bigger this time, which I hear is very normal, and there are times my body makes SURE I know that I am having 2 kids very close together. I'll spare the details, but the body is an amazing thing. I have been consistently working out again, and it just makes me a happier person.I'm carrying super low again this time. Not my favorite, but I don't exactly get an opinon

Luke is one active little boy! Constantly making his presence known, loves to kick his sister when she's sitting on me, and runs marathons at night. My wonderful husband is the decorator in this family, and he is very passionate about getting us started on the nursery. I found some inspiration, and he's run with it. I'm so pumped with how it's going to turn out. He made some awesome wall art so far for the room.

Monkey:
We've had a challenging time in the last month. Katelynn had some lymph node swelling starting over a month ago, and it has not responded to medication. We met with an ENT and are on a 2nd round of antibiotics. We are praying that these work, I think they are starting to. It's been a challenge because girlfriend HATES this round. With a screaming, fighting passion. Antibiotics don't sit well with me, and she is definitely my child. The battle royale twice a day is trying, and then the general fussiness. She at some point broke through her 9th tooth, her first molar. I think we are getting another one.
I talk about it a lot but she LOVES to be active and explore. She's never really been a "lap" baby and it's never been more apparent. She hates having to be still, and is going to give her daddy an ulcer by exploring anything possible. The baby gate was somehow open the other day and she was half way up the stairs when we found her. She hates to sit still or wait, so we have been talking about patience and not losing her mind.... that's going.... well.... ya know.

It snowed this weekend and we bundled up and went outside to "play"! She loved it, but hated the gloves. We constantly tell her she would love life so much more if she would just walk, but she doesn't agree.

If my purse is ANYWHERE near her, it is scattered. I've found that she prefers that over any toys while waiting. When waiting on a doctors apt, i'm very thankful for her obsession with my purse. Until later when I go to grab something....

The look of teething.

Devastation when our veggies have to sit for a minute to cool off.....
